In 1859 an eighteen year old chemist, William Henry Perkin was trying to synthesize quinine (then used to cure malaria) and noticed a colorful residue which turned out to be the first analine dye. Analine is a chemical compound with a phenyl group attached to an amino group.

Mauveine, also known as aniline purple and Perkin’s mauve, was one of the first synthetic dyes.
